Hodgsons was founded in 1942 when John Hodgson began helping farmers in Cornwall navigate tax rule changes.
Fast forward a generation, Peter Hodgson grew the firm and expanded our services to support businesses, charities, not-for-profit organisations, families and individuals around the UK, helping to make us the firm we are today.
Following in the family footsteps, Peter’s son, James, began his career working for several of the big accountancy firms. After specialising in both audit and corporate finance he returned to Cornwall joining Hodgsons in 2004 and took up the reins from Peter in 2014.
Our reach and expertise may have widened in the past 80 years, but some things haven’t changed, including our focus on specialist knowledge, insightful advice and a truly personal service.
We’re proud to say that most of our work comes from referrals and that some of our clients have been with us through the generations since we started.

James is great at seeing the big picture and helping our clients consider the wider impact of decisions. He gives our clients practical advice and feedback, and acts as an independent sounding board for the full range of accountancy and tax considerations, including strategic business decisions, mentoring and succession planning. Above all, he has a genuine and strong sense of care for his clients and his team.
Ross loves getting stuck into more complex tax issues. This includes planning for inheritance and business tax such as R&D tax credits, SEIS and EIS investment. He’s brilliant at finding simple solutions to difficult problems.
Claire knows the Hodgsons office inside and out. Super organised and efficient, she’s the voice on the end of the phone you’re likely to hear when you call us. She’ll answer your query if she can, or direct you to the best person to help you.
Eagle-eyed Julia looks after client accounts and is known for her attention to detail. She’ll talk you through everything when doing your accounts and make sure you claim tax relief on any necessary expenses. Julia’s also the one to speak to for training on everything bookkeeping related.
Cool as a cucumber, Jonathan’s the person to speak to on all things personal tax related. From doing complicated returns to tax savings, he’s your main contact for personal tax, liabilities and capital gains. Jonathan will make sure you pay the least amount of tax possible.
Erin looks after our trust clients. If you’re a trustee, beneficiary or investment manager, she’ll be your contact and will help you deal with day-to-day administration. Erin also looks at tax-efficient trust distributions and prepares year-end accounts and personal tax returns.
James, or Jim, is our resident accounting software wizard. He’ll help you keep your books in order and talk you through everything when doing your accounts. Jim can also help you choose the best accounting software and train you on how to get the best out of it.
When we do your accounts, Johannah will contact you if we’ve got any queries to make sure we’ve got all the information we need.
Archie is a keen learner and is fast developing his accounting skills quickly. You may see him if when you pop into the office.

Luke is eager to learn the world of tax and fast developing his skills – he is quickly grasping all the knowledge. He may speak with you when he completes your tax return.
